چکیده

This paper examines the interaction among short-lived and long-lived TCP flows in a test network that can be operated as an ordinary best effort or as a Differentiated Services (DS) enabled network, and shows how TCP service can be improved by isolating TCP flows based on their different characteristics. The target of the measurements was to investigate the interaction among TCP flows having similar priority classification but different traffic volume. The flows are originating from a single customer network and destined to the ISP’s DS enabled network. With our measurements, we have shown the benefits resulting from the separation of such TCP flows into two categories: large-volume long-lived FTP-type flows and small-volume short-lived interactive (e.g. HTTPtype) flows. For FTP flows goodput was increased and for HTTP flows decreased transfer time was obtained.

A new Three Color Marker for TCP flows

In Differentiated Services networks, packets may receive a different treatment according to their Differentiated Services Code Point (DSCP) label. As a consequence, packet marking schemes can be devised to differentiate packets belonging to a same TCP flow, with the goal of improving the experienced performance. This paper presents an extensive performance evaluation of a new adaptive packet ma...

Bandwidth Assurance Issues for TCP flows in a Differentiated Services Network *

Much industry attention has recently been focused on providing differentiated levels of service to users on IP networks. One such proposal is the RIO scheme proposed by Clark [4]. RIO is an extension of the RED algorithm that relies on a differentiated drop treatment during congestion to cause different levels of service. The end result of differentiated dropping of packets during congestion is...

Configuring a Differentiated Services domain towards achieving fair distribution of resources between TCP and UDP flows

In this paper experimental results from simulating a Differentiated Services network are presented. The simulated network is configured towards achieving a fair distribution of network resources between congestion responsive TCP and congestion unresponsive UDP flows, tackling the TCP friendliness issue. The main configuration parameters, considered in this paper, are the TCP and UDP Committed I...

Effect of Higher Priority EF Traffic on TCP Throughput and Fairness

In this paper, we study the effect on TCP of assigning higher-priority to traffic requesting Expedited Forwarding (EF) service in a Differentiated Services network. We analyze networks in which (1) EF traffic occupies different fractions of link bandwidth and is bursty at different time-scales; and (2) multiple TCP flows with heterogeneous round trip times share the network with the EF traffic....
